the Scoot-Away
The story of Scoot started on 1 November 2011 when the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group saw a gap in its flight offerings. With subsidiaries Tigerair and SilkAir serving the no-frills and full-service segments respectively for short haul flights, Scoot is the final piece to the puzzle, fulfilling the need for a no-frills carrier to complement the full-service SIA for medium to long haul flights. The airline taps on the under-served market segment on existing Group routes like Sydney, and introduces new destinations such as Gold Coast and Tianjin.
Since its maiden flight from Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 to Sydney International Airport on 5 June 2012, Scoot now offers flights between 13 locations: Singapore and Sydney, Gold Coast, Perth, Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo, Tianjin, Shenyang, Nanjing, Qingdao, Seoul, and Hong Kong. It is managed independently from its parent company, and runs from separate offices. Operating from an initial four Boeing 777-200 aircrafts acquired from SIA, the fleet continues to grow in size, with six in service today, and awaiting the addition of 20 Boeing 787s, powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine, to be delivered from late 2014. Scoot offers not only fantastic value airfares, up to 40% cheaper than traditional long haul airlines, but also a safe, reliable, and modern travel experience with a unique service attitude— Scootitude. It is the underpinning company and service culture that founding CEO Campbell Wilson says, “conveys spontaneity, movement, informality and a touch of quirkiness.”
Mr Wilson has been with the SIA Group for over 15 years. He first joined SIA in April 1996 in Auckland, and has since held several positions in Singapore, Vancouver, Hong Kong and Tokyo. An avid traveller at heart, he spent a year backpacking the world before starting his career with SIA. When he is not working, he spends time with his wife cycling in Italy and France, rafting the Grand Canyon, walking the Great Wall, and kayaking national parks in New Zealand. Mr Wilson fully believes in Mark Twain’s statement that “travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness”, and loves experiencing new places, and seeing new things. Under his leadership, it is unsurprising that the airline promises a fuss-free, engaging, fun, reliable, highly customisable and good value way to travel, which appeals to the young and young-at-heart.
